An Unceasing Revelation of Divine Light

January 1, 2010 - Wayne Adams

About the piece

Aluminum foil on wooden stretcher
32" x 24"
2009

"An Unceasing Revelation of Divine Light" is a reference to the hierarchy of lights described by the 4th century mystic, St. Gregory the Theologian (Nazianzen). Gregory cites I John 1:5 in describing several types of light in hierarchical order, starting with God and including all humanity and the church as physical manifestations of the light of God. The material qualities of aluminum foil strike me as an interesting diagram of humanity's reflection of this "Divine Light" and its infinitely variable and changing nature.
