Oil on linen
2009
Clothing is second skin. It serves to protect us from elements and other's attraction, but people use it to convey their character. Clothing doesn't define us, but we define ourselves through it. How horrifying would it be to find our clothes existing without us? We need them more than they need us. They are the shells of our mobility.
As other people are what I am elated and troubled by, I create images of those second skins that I can't avoid dwelling upon.

Jay Walker turns the familiar to iconic in his paintings, drawings, and sculptures through a form of conceptual realism. He removes traditional contexts, isolating figures and clothing, and elevates them to an archetypal existence. His work offers the question—What is the spirit of man?
Jay received his MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He will be having a solo exhibit featuring his sculptures at the Abington Art Center in Jenkintown, PA opening April 25th.
