“Everyone knows the United Church is not the only church with renewal issues,” said Michael Van Pelt, president of Cardus, a Hamilton-based religion and society think tank. “Commitment to church in general is suffering across the country but at least [the United Church is] talking about it. You have to give them that.
“But what you have to ask yourself is what kind of institutions have been able remain vibrant by compromising what they hold to be deeply true,” added Mr. Van Pelt. “I can’t think of any.”
