Join us at the Balfour House for Doors Open 2025 to discover how adaptive reuse has preserved this stunning Hamilton landmark!
Formerly known as the Chedoke Estate, this majestic manor boasts a rich heritage dating back to its origins as an Iroquois settlement. Built by the Scottish immigrant and esteemed grain merchant William Scott Burn, Balfour House has witnessed the stewardship of several prominent Hamiltonians throughout its storied past, including railway magnate Charles John Brydges and the Southam family, founders of the Hamilton Spectator.
Today, under the care of the Ontario Heritage Trust and managed by the City of Hamilton, this historic mansion is lovingly maintained by its tenant organization, Cardus. As part of Doors Open Hamilton 2025, visitors will have the opportunity to explore the artful interior of the main house through guided tours or self-exploration. The charming elegance of this 19th century estate extends to its grounds, which include original gardens and an orchard over a century old.
Tours and exhibits this year will highlight how a team led by Julian Smith and local architectural firm Invizij carefully renovated each part of the house to meet the standard of modern building codes while preserving its timeless heritage. Stepping outside, visitors and groups of all ages will be able to enjoy live music, games, and spaces to picnic. A few accessible parking places and an accessible washroom are available on site. Refer to this map for other parking options.
