The Public Faith Index

A comprehensive study of the segments of Canadian society

Cardus and the Angus Reid Institute (ARI) developed the Public Faith Index in 2018, which uses 17 variables to categorize Canadian views on the role and value of faith in public life.

Each year, ARI will ask Canadians questions among three broad themes regarding their view of faith and its place in Canadian society. The answers indicate how Canadians fit into three different profiles:

  1. Public Faith Proponents who welcome faith’s role in public life
  2. Public Faith Opponents who want to close the public square to faith
  3. The Uncertain who take a middle position
