Lois Benham-Smith is a Senior Fellow at Cardus. Alongside her husband David, she leads Cardus’s Entrepreneurial NextGEN (ENG) Fellowship program.
With a varied background in Leadership, Entrepreneurial Start-up, Healthcare and Education, Lois is passionate about helping people to succeed in whatever sphere they serve. As a firm believer that legacy and lifelong impact are not just whimsical ideas but choices we make, she seeks to empower others in their calling.
As a Registered Nurse, Lois has had a variety of experience over 25 years of service in a variety of settings across Canada. Having worked in large and small hospitals as well as in the community and as a staff educator, Lois has a well-rounded view of nursing.
As the founder and Executive Director of Atwell Centre (retired), a Pregnancy Care Centre, in Hamilton and Oakville, Ontario, she is passionate about women’s healthcare and strength-based counseling. Atwell is one of the few Pregnancy Care Centres in Canada that offer limited medical services including ultrasound.
Lois has experienced the educational system in many different settings: homeschooling, Christian schooling and public school. With these experiences she is a firm believer in a lifelong educational journey, at all stages of life.
On a personal note, Lois is married to David Smith. They have three married children, two granddaughters and two new grandbabies who they will be meeting in spring 2026. Lois is an active member of Community Church in Waterdown and enjoys reading and spending time with family and friends- new and old.
Lois is the recipient of the Canada 150 Flamborough-Glanbrook Nation Builder Award, issued by Mr. David Sweet, M.P. in November 2017. Lois is also a recipient of the Soroptomist Women of Distinction Award, issued by Soroptomist International of Stoney Creek-Niagara in March 2018.
