Religion in the Public Square

Survey data confirms that religion remains a significant part of Canadians’ and Americans’ lives, but not to the same degree. In partnership with Cardus, the Angus Reid Institute surveyed 5,000 adults in Canada and 5,000 in the United States in March 2025. Here’s one key takeaway: While 37 percent of Americans identify as religiously committed compared to 18 percent of Canadians. Those who are religiously committed typically display higher rates of belief in God, behaviours like prayer and reading a sacred text, and regular attendance at religious services, among other factors. What does that mean for public life in North America today? Cardus Executive Vice President Ray Pennings discusses that and other survey findings with podcast host Shawn Whatley.
