Does Alberta Need to Rethink School Funding?

As the teacher’s strike in Alberta drags on, shuttering the province’s public, Catholic, and francophone schools, debate is raging about school funding. A citizen’s initiative petition has been launched, seeking to hold a referendum on whether Alberta should eliminate provincial funding for independent schools. The Line: Alberta looks at both sides of the issue in its podcast hosted by Rob Breakenridge. In this episode, the teacher who launched the referendum petition lays out her case before Catharine Kavanagh, western stakeholder director at Cardus, takes the microphone. Listen in as Catharine explains why yanking funding from independent schools would do nothing to improve overcrowded neighbourhood schools, though it would certainly hurt Alberta kids and Alberta society overall.
