With many families struggling because of high inflation, the federal government is right to target predatory lending. However, Cardus is disappointed the budget focuses entirely on the cost of loans without addressing the real challenge of inequitable access to credit.

Leaders at all levels need to do more to reduce hate crimes against Canada’s religious communities. That call comes from Toward a Hopeful Future: Facing Down Religious Hate, a research brief by think tank Cardus.

Indigenous Canadians are speaking out about religious faith in a new booklet aimed at helping educate all Canadians. Indigenous Voices of Faith includes interviews of 12 Indigenous Canadians from across the country talking about the relationship among their culture, heritage, and religious identities. 

Think tank Cardus is pleased to see several positive developments contained in the Alberta government’s 2023 budget. Alberta will be indexing the Child and Family Benefit to inflation and providing limited-time payments for parents with children under 18.

Six in 10 children in Canada live in married-parent families, a proportion that's held steady since 2016 after declining for decades. That’s the key finding in a new Cardus report on previously unreleased Statistics Canada data from the 2021 census.

Parliament has not seriously assessed current safeguards for medically assisted suicide, nor has it given due consideration to whether Canadians facing poverty, disability or other conditions receive enough support to live with dignity instead of choosing to die by medically assisted suicide.

Less than one-third of Canadians are comfortable with offering medically assisted suicide to those suffering only from a mental illness—and 51% of Canadians oppose it.
