FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 08, 2023

HAMILTON, ON – Cardus is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Lynn Swaner as President, U.S., effective January 1, 2024. In this newly created role, Swaner will serve as a member of the Cardus executive team, oversee and grow Cardus’ education portfolio in the U.S., and provide strategic support for the work of Comment, Cardus’ flagship journal of public theology for the common good. Swaner’ s new role will require her full suite of skills, including her internationally recognized abilities as a scholar and researcher, her considerable experience in fundraising, and her strategic and innovative thinking.

“This is a strategic appointment for Cardus and represents a bold, new step toward building the common good across North America,” said Cardus CEO Michael Van Pelt. “We are thrilled to have Dr. Swaner join us in this new role, as she brings the right mix of expertise to help us expand Cardus’ scholarship, thought leadership, and cultural engagement within the American context.”

In addition to serving in the role of Cardus Senior Fellow for the past five years, Swaner comes to Cardus having most recently held the position of Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer at the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). In this role, she oversaw strategic planning, thought leadership, and research efforts at ACSI. Swaner was also responsible for grant-funded, groundbreaking initiatives, like the Flourishing Schools Research project and the “Future Ready” study on financial sustainability in independent school education (co-published with Cardus).

Prior to her work at ACSI, Swaner served as a professor of education, academic administrator at the university level, and Christian school leader in New York. She also worked as a national evaluator and collaborator for multiple grant-funded projects with the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). Swaner’s educational background includes a doctorate in organization and leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University, as well as a master’s degree in counseling from Long Island University. A lifelong learner, she will complete an executive diploma in Strategy and Innovation at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, in early 2024.

Swaner is the editor or lead author of numerous books, including Flourishing Together: A Christian Vision for Students, Educators, and Schools (Eerdmans), Future Ready: Innovative Missions and Models in Christian Education (Cardus and ACSI), and MindShift: Catalyzing Change in Christian Education (ACSI). In addition to authoring multiple book chapters and monographs, her peer-reviewed research has appeared in publications like the International Journal of Educational Development, Eton Journal for Innovation and Research in Education, and Liberal Education.
