FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 6, 2025
“The federal government’s child care announcement today is just throwing good money after bad. The new national daycare system has created heartache for many parents and resulted in longer waitlists with only a minority of families being able to access its spaces. Ultimately, the solution is not a matter of funding. Eight provinces amended their agreements to increase the amount of unspent money they could carry over year-to year. In four cases, funding had to be rolled into future years twice because provincial bureaucracies weren’t able to spend the dollars effectively and efficiently.
Worse yet, the federal government has collected data from provinces and territories but has failed to publish even one progress report on the national system since its initial $30 billion commitment in 2021. Now the federal government is promising to spend another $37 billion without accounting for the effectiveness of its previous spending.”
