Rev. Dr. Andrew Bennett Becomes Cardus Senior Fellow and Senior Advisor for Simeon Initiative

A good step for Cardus’s future and the future of Catholic education in Canada

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

17 February, 2026

OTTAWA — Cardus is pleased to announce the appointment of the Rev. Dr. Andrew Bennett as Senior Fellow and Senior Advisor for the Simeon Initiative.

After almost a decade of work with Cardus, Father Deacon Andrew will assume the position of Executive Director at Clear Water Academy, an independent Catholic school in Calgary, Alberta. He leaves behind him a legacy of deep engagement with Christian leaders and other faith communities across the country, defence of religious freedom, and a clear articulation of the central importance of faith in our communities and in our public life together.

“We’re delighted to have Andrew continue his fruitful relationship with Cardus as a senior fellow, as he moves on to the next challenge,” says Brian Dijkema, President, Canada at Cardus. “We consider the development and growth of civil society institutions, and particularly the role of education, as core to the common good of our country and for the development of Canadian citizens, and we are pleased to see him take on this leadership role. We are delighted that he will continue to assist and advise us on two important files: religious freedom and engagement of faith communities, and building encounters between Jewish and Christian communities across the country to stand resolutely against antisemitism.”

“I am deeply grateful for the nearly 10 years I have spent at Cardus and the opportunities that it has given me to champion religious freedom and to advocate for the centrality of religious faith in our common life as Canadians,” says Father Deacon Andrew. “I am excited by the new challenge that I am taking on at Clear Water Academy and to the continuing relationship with Cardus as Senior Fellow that will bring mutual benefits. I am especially delighted to remain involved in the Simeon Initiative in an advisory capacity and to maintaining my contacts in the Jewish community.”

We believe that this is a good step in Cardus’s future and the future of Catholic education in Canada. We wish Father Deacon Andrew all the best and pray for God’s blessings on his work.
