Paul W. Bennett, Ed.D., is Director of Schoolhouse Institute and Adjunct Professor of Education at Saint Mary’s University based in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

PAUL W. BENNETT, EdD, is director of Schoolhouse Institute and adjunct professor of education at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Building on a distinguished teaching and education leadership career, Paul now roams at large as one of Canada’s leading education policy researchers and commentators. Earlier in his career, he was twice recognized for history teaching behaviour excellence, produced three nationally recognized Canadian history textbooks, served as an elected public school trustee, and headed two of Canada’s leading independent schools. Since September 2009, he has written four books, including Vanishing Schools, Threatened Communities: The Contested Schoolhouse in Maritime Canada, 1850–2010 (2011), and sixteen policy research papers for the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies, the Northern Policy Institute, the Institute for Research on Public Policy, and the Macdonald-Laurier Institute. His latest book is The State of the System: A Reality Check on Canada’s Schools (2020). For the past six years, Paul has been the national coordinator for research ED in Canada. In 2018 and 2022, Paul’s education commentary blog, Educhatter, was recognized as the top education blog in Canada.
